They say patience, persistence and perspiration make an unbeatable combination for success. The team at Lucas & Co chartered accountants might add a fourth “p” word into the mix: people.
Having entered the Client Choice Awards five years in a row and being named a finalist on every occasion, the small Queensland-based accounting firm happily notched up not one but two wins in the 2022 Awards. Lucas & Co was named winner of both the Best Accounting & Consulting Services Firm (less than $30m revenue) and the Best Tax Firm (less than $30m revenue).
Founder and Managing Director of the firm, Jean Marc Li (pictured above), said persistence and continued buy-in to the business strategy from his team were crucial to the firm’s success this year.
“The most important people involved in [business strategy] are my wife and co-director, my NAB banker as their support is critical, and my team and team leaders,” said Founder and Managing Director of the firm, Jean Marc Li.
“A turn-key operation is crucial to be able to achieve scale and limit risks.”
The annual Client Choice Awards recognise best practice in professional services across four categories of accounting and consulting, built and natural environment consulting, legal, and specialist IP services. They are decided based on clients’ votes – not via panels, judges, or self-nominations – thus offering firms unique feedback on the preferences and satisfaction of their clients.
Mr Li founded his firm just five years ago with the goal of becoming a technology-focused and solution-oriented accounting firm, providing as much value as possible while still achieving operational excellence. Lucas & Co is a small practice with a headcount of fewer than 10 professionals, but it didn’t stop the team from winning their clients’ satisfaction in 2022.
Mr Li said the years of being a finalist had helped drive the team’s appetite for continuing success.
“Being selected as a finalist for the last five years (2017, runner up, 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022) is important to us as a firm. It brings service quality and the strive for operational excellence to the forefront and gives my team a target to aim for.”

He added quotes by renowned Japanese chef Jiro Ono best illustrated his future goals for the firm.
